Bio
Chris Capuozzo (b. 1966) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Capuozzo graduated from the High School of Art & Design in Manhattan and has a BA from The School of Visual Arts. Capuozzo’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and North Carolina.
As a young artist in the mid-’80s, Capuozzo was painting trains in the New York graffiti scene and creating album art and posters for the New York hardcore punk scene. In 1985, Capuozzo attended SVA in NYC, studying with Art Spiegelman, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Goldstein, Maureen Galas, and Bill Beckley. In 1987 Capuozzo was an assistant to Jack Goldstein, collaborating with him on his “Totems” project. The computer became an important tool for Capuozzo and in the mid 90’s he was a co-founder of an innovative design studio called Funny Garbage. At Funny Garbage, Capuozzo brought his unique visual language into the interactive design world. The work done at Funny Garbage attracted clients such as David Byrne, Cartoon Network, Criterion, etc. One of the major projects was the website for Cartoon Network. This award winning project included some of the first cartoons and games ever created for the internet. Capuozzo was part of an art collective called Boo Palace with Gary Panter, Ric Heitzman, and Peter Girardi. Boo Palace’s activities included original comics, sculptures, psychedelic light shows, and puppet shows. In 2000, The Cooper Hewitt Museum acquired one of Capuozzo’s sketchbooks for their collection. In 2004, Capuozzo had a solo show titled “The Launching of the Dream Weapon” at Sandra Gering Gallery. In 2007, he did the visual design for a seminal book about the history of New York graffiti character design called Mascots & Mugs. This book included his graffiti work from the ’80s. Starting in 2007, Capuozzo began publishing a book called Crazygon. The current issue is called “Crazygon Trips Festival” and this 136 page meditation on visual artifacts of psychedelia was published in 2022.
